As Told By, Founder Lisette

There are over 1,200 animal rescue and rehoming centres throughout the UK. Most of them rely on donations and are run by volunteers. This year has been especially hard for these centres and I’m glad that DoggyLottery is able to help. I’ve always been passionate about dogs and I knew one day I would find a way of working with/for them. Before I tell you more about DoggyLottery, let me introduce you to the inspiration behind it all, my 3-legged rescue dog named Beautie.

In 2014, my husband and I were working and living in Dubai. Whenever possible I would volunteer at a local dog rescue centre. On a regular basis, we would host open days for visitors to come and check out the dogs looking for their forever home. It was during one of those days that I met Beautie. A 3-legged saluki cross with a tongue so long it nearly reached the floor. There was something about her that caught my eye. Out of all the dogs, she was the one dog that was the most social and happy. Making sure everyone was having a good time. I remember thinking to myself that we humans could learn something from her positive attitude to life! Nobody seemed to be interested in her because of her missing leg. I told my husband about her that night, but we agreed that living on the 16th floor of a skyscraper was not an ideal environment for a dog.

A couple of weeks later, I saw on social media that Beautie had lost her foster family and she was stuck in a crate at a vet. Surely being stuck in a crate at a vet is worse than being with a loving family on the 16th floor? Long story short, we went to pick her up the following day. We initially said we would foster until we could find her a forever home. Needless to say, that rapidly changed into asking for the adoption papers. Beautie had found her forever home.

I am a big believer that things happen for a reason. This was definitely the case with Beautie. Shortly after rescuing her, I lost my dad. She gave me the motivation to get up each day and go outside. She would sit with me and lick away my tears and was able to put a smile on my face whenever I needed it. Dogs are truly incredible animals and have a huge positive impact on our wellbeing. Beautie is the reason I wanted to find a way to do more for rescue dogs and the centres that care for them.

Once we moved to the UK in 2017, I started to look into the problems faced by rescue centres to try and understand what support they needed most. I was quite shocked to learn that over 130.000 dogs get abandoned each year. No wonder there are so many rescue centres! Also, these centres rely solely on donations from the public and money raised through fundraising activities to survive.

When I mentioned what I had discovered to my cousin (Lee Brown), who is crazy for dogs too, we instantly knew this was something we wanted to try and change together. We started brainstorming ideas on how to tackle the issues. Within days we had a business plan made and DoggyLottery was born.

What is DoggyLottery?

DoggyLottery is a non-profit that raises funds for dog rescue centres in need through an online lottery. Every four weeks, five different dog rescue centres (who are nominated by the public), are partnered with us.

Tickets cost £1.50, 60% goes to the charity fund and 30% goes to the prize fund, which is shared between 20 guaranteed weekly winners. When buying a ticket, participants are asked to vote for their favourite dog (rescue centre). The more votes a centre gets, the bigger the share of the charity fund they receive after the four-week period.

Besides raising funds for dog rescue centres, we are committed to raising awareness of the issues contributing to the number of homeless dogs. By creating and sharing educational content through our communication channels we hope to make an impact.

DoggyLottery launched on the 25th of July 2020 and so far, we have raised over £10,000 for 35 different dog charities.

How can you get involved?

By buying a lottery ticket at, by following us on social media @doggylottery or by nominating a dog rescue centre that deserves to take part in DoggyLottery -

Only by working together can we change dogs’ lives forever!
